California attorney who never wanted to practice law is sentenced for defrauding 100 EB-5 investors

Attorney Victoria Chan, along with her Chinese-national father, defrauded Chinese investors of $50 million in investment capital for the supposed purpose of building mixed-use developments including senior living facilities. The pair instead used the capital to repay other investors and buy million-dollar homes. Chan was ordered to pay $2.5 million in restitution, and forfeit $20 million in property. She also was suspended by the California State Bar; she claimed she never wanted to be an attorney and only became one to placate her father.
