International students attending public universities in the U.S. must pay much higher out-of-state tuition fees. As an example, in-state tuition for UCLA is $14,478 but international students must pay $47,052. However, concurrent filing, filing an I-526E and I-485 petition simultaneously, may enable students to qualify for in-state tuition fees. “The answer will depend on the state of residence and the college of choice,” says immigration lawyer Andy Semotiuk, as adjustment of status qualifies for in-state tuition in some but not all states.
