How EB-5 Projects & Opportunity Zones Are Similar

Veteran securities lawyer Clem G. Turner has plenty of experience in EB-5 green card industry. He’s now applying that experience to the new world of Opportunity Zones. “They could be in the same project, existing peacefully in the same capital stack. Not that they are going to be tied or related to each other any more than any other senior loan in the project.”

Turner cites the similarities between the programs: Both can deal with distressed areas. Investors have their money locked up for longer time periods — in Opportunity Zones, to avoid capital gains taxation, money must be invested for at least a decade. And both programs must have investors hold equity in projects that need some structuring. Turner points out that experience with structuring investment vehicles for one program could apply to the other.See the GlobeSt.com article
