EB-5 project involving former immigration building in Miami becomes an immigration disaster

In 2015, 100 Chinese EB-5 investors committed to a project to refurbish an old Immigration and Naturalization Service building in Miami, the Triton Center. However, construction never started, leading to lawsuits. Michael Goldberg, a court-appointed receiver, says that two men, Benny Lam and Fu Jing "Leo" Wu, diverted millions of dollars of investor capital into offshore shell companies and a separate Miami project. Lam is said to have threatened the Chinese investors in a WeChat group that legal action would end their hopes for Green Cards and the return of their money.
