EB-5 can play a vital role in disaster recovery and prevention efforts. For example, after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, in 2017, EB-5 helped fund reconstruction and recovery initiatives. These projects included infrastructure, telecommunication, affordable housing, renewable energy, and grid resilience (the entire island lost its energy when Hurricane Maria struck). Additionally, if such projects are rural or in the national interest, they may qualify EB-5 investors for visa set-asides and faster processing.
